Wilpattu

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park — a north-west wilderness of dense forest, natural lakes called villus, and wildlife including leopards, sloth bears, elephants, and crocodiles without Yala's tourist density when access permits.

The park reopened fully after conflict-era closures and now draws safari enthusiasts seeking quieter leopard country and unique forest-lake scenery. Entrance near Puttalam connects with Kalpitiya coast and Anuradhapura triangle routes.

We recommend Wilpattu for experienced safari travellers or second-time visitors avoiding Yala crowds — minimum one full day, ideally two drives.
