Medieval Capital in Stone
Polonnaruwa succeeded Anuradhapura as Sri Lanka's medieval capital from the 11th century, leaving a compact archaeological park of palaces, stupas, and rock-carved Buddhas among reservoirs and shady trees. UNESCO listing protects the site as a masterpiece of Sinhalese civilisation.
Unlike Anuradhapura's sprawl, Polonnaruwa's main monuments cluster within a manageable circuit — ideal for a half-day by bicycle or car with frequent stops. Gal Vihara's four Buddha statues carved from a single granite face are the undisputed highlight.
Most visitors arrive from Sigiriya, Habarana, or Dambulla. One full day suffices for the core sites; add an evening for Parakrama Samudra sunset views.
