Nilaveli

Nilaveli stretches north from Trincomalee as a premium east-coast beach — pale sand, calm seas in season, and boat departures to Pigeon Island National Park for snorkelling among reef sharks and turtles when conditions allow.

Resorts and guesthouses line the shore while Uppuveli offers a slightly busier alternative closer to town. The east season May through October defines best sea conditions.

We base snorkellers and beach purists here with Trincomalee temple and harbour days sandwiched between water activities.

Boats reach Pigeon Island in twenty minutes — two islets surrounded by shallow reefs where blacktip reef sharks patrol and turtles graze when visibility is good. Park fees and snorkel gear included on standard trips.

Morning boats beat afternoon crowds and heat — limited shade on island means hat and water essential.

We use licensed operators and advise against touching coral or chasing sharks for photos.

East-coast dolphin pods appear on some Nilaveli boat trips — not as famous as Mirissa whales but occasional bonuses on Pigeon Island crossings or dedicated marine tours when operators run them.
