Koggala

Koggala combines a large coastal lagoon, stilt-fishing traditions, and literary history — Martin Wickramasinghe's museum preserves Sinhala cultural heritage beside beaches where iconic stilt fishermen still work at dawn.

Madol Duwa, the "island of mangroves" immortalised in Wickramasinghe's novel, lies within the lake and is reached by boat through mangrove channels. Nearby Ahangama and Weligama extend surf and bay options.

We use Koggala for lagoon boat mornings, museum visits, and stilt-fisher dawn shoots without staying in crowded Unawatuna.

Boat trips cross Koggala Lake through mangrove tunnels to Madol Duwa islet and cinnamon plots — kingfishers, herons, and water monitors common. Tours last one to two hours with optional temple stops on small islands.
