Ella

Ella is a small hill town in Uva Province, wrapped in tea estates and cloud forest with views that stretch across the southern plains on clear days. What began as a quiet railway stop has become one of Sri Lanka's most popular highland destinations, drawing hikers, train enthusiasts, and travellers seeking cooler air after the lowland heat.

The town itself sits along a ridge with a compact main street of guesthouses, cafes, and viewpoints. Most sights — the bridge, peaks, and waterfalls — lie within tuk-tuk distance or short drives, though fit walkers can reach several trails on foot from town.

We recommend at least two nights in Ella so you can hike at sunrise, catch a train in daylight, and enjoy the evening food scene without rushing onward to the coast or Cultural Triangle.

Little Adam's Peak is the gentler of Ella's two signature hikes — a stepped trail through tea fields leading to a rocky summit with panoramic views over Ella Gap and the plains below. Most walkers reach the top in 45 to 60 minutes; sunrise and late afternoon offer the best light.

Ella Rock is a longer, more demanding route that combines rail track walking, forest paths, and a final scramble to a high viewpoint. Allow three to four hours round trip and start early to avoid midday heat. A local guide is worthwhile here as sections of the trail are unmarked and can confuse first-time visitors.

Alongside street vendors, a growing café scene offers wood-fired pizza, Sri Lankan rice and curry, and international breakfast through the evening hours. Many guesthouse rooftops and terrace bars look over the valley, making dinner as much about the view as the menu.
