Colombo is Sri Lanka's commercial capital and the usual entry point for international flights. Spread along the coast and inland canals, it mixes glass towers, colonial churches, bustling bazaars, and leafy neighbourhoods that reward a day or two of exploration before or after your island circuit.

The city has accelerated its facelift in recent years — restored Dutch Hospital precinct, Port City development, and new dining districts — while retaining pockets of old character in Pettah's markets and the narrow lanes of Cinnamon Gardens.

We use Colombo for arrival recovery, last-night convenience, or focused city touring. Traffic can be heavy; we plan routes and timing to minimise hours stuck in jams.

Pettah is Colombo's dense trading quarter — narrow streets packed with wholesale shops selling spices, electronics, fabrics, and gold. The Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar) with its candy-striped facade is a landmark amid the chaos, and fruit markets spill onto pavements near the harbour.

Navigation is easier with a guide on first visit; otherwise pick one specialty — spices, for example — and explore that lane. Bargaining is expected in many shops. Morning hours are liveliest and slightly cooler.

We combine Pettah with Fort district colonial sights or a curated street-food walk. Modest dress is respectful near active mosques and temples in the area.

Colombo is Sri Lanka's best city for food diversity — from hole-in-the-wall hoppers at dawn to rooftop seafood and South Indian vegetarian meals. Neighborhoods such as Colombo 7 (Cinnamon Gardens) and Colombo 3 (Kollupitiya) cluster higher-end options.

Guided street-food tours sample vada, kottu, and Ceylon tea in controlled portions with hygiene-conscious vendors. For special occasions, heritage hotels and chef-driven restaurants offer refined takes on local ingredients.
