Yapahuwa Rock Fortress Climb

Yapahuwa Rock Fortress is a 13th-century granite rock citadel that rises 90 metres above the surrounding flat plains of the North Western Province, crowned by the remains of a palace complex that briefly housed the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha — Sri Lanka's most precious relic — during the reign of King Bhuvanaikabahu I (1272–1284 CE). The approach to the summit passes through an extraordinarily ornate lion staircase — its carved stone balustrades depicting dancing figures and mythological animals considered masterpieces of Sri Lankan medieval sculpture — before ascending to the exposed plateau where the palace foundations and a guardian shrine survive.

The views from the summit across the flat jungle-covered plains are remarkable in their extent and emptiness.

Yapahuwa was chosen as Sri Lanka's capital in 1272 CE by King Bhuvanaikabahu I, who retreated to the defensible rock fortress to protect the Tooth Relic from South Indian invasion. The relic was held here for 12 years before being taken to South India by the Pandyan king Arya Chakravarti in 1284 CE and later recovered.

The site was abandoned as a royal capital when the Tooth Relic was eventually returned and enshrined in Polonnaruwa, and Yapahuwa gradually faded into jungle until rediscovery and partial excavation in the 19th century.

Today, Yapahuwa Rock Fortress Climb remains one of the highlights of visiting North Western Province, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.

Entry fee applies; the site is open daily. The ascent involves stairs and some scrambling; moderate fitness required.
