History

When it began and why it matters

Arugam Bay's surf potential was discovered by visiting Australian and South African surfers in the 1970s, who found the point break by chance during extended travel through Sri Lanka. The bay's development as a surf tourism destination was slow and disrupted by the civil conflict that affected the east coast until 2009; since the end of hostilities, Arugam Bay has rapidly developed into a full-spectrum surf destination with surf schools, yoga retreats, and seafood restaurants alongside its original village life.

It was listed in Time magazine's top 25 surf destinations worldwide in 2007.

Today, Arugam Bay Surfing remains one of the highlights of visiting Eastern Province, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.
