What it is

Nine Arch Bridge Train Viewing — the full experience

The Nine Arch Bridge at Ella is one of the most photographed railway structures in the world: a graceful nine-span stone viaduct built without a gram of steel, carrying the highland railway 24 metres above a lush jungle gorge. Visitors walk 15 minutes from Ella town to a viewpoint at a neighbouring hillside tea estate that frames the bridge perfectly, and the experience is timed around the daily train schedule — watching a blue and yellow train creep across the arches above the treetops is a truly memorable scene.

The bridge is surrounded by dense forest and tea gardens, and the walk to the viewpoint is itself a pleasant stroll through authentic village life.

Shorta Tours arranges Nine Arch Bridge Train Viewing as part of a tailored private itinerary, providing expert guides, comfortable private transfers, and hand-picked operators to ensure a seamless and truly memorable experience.

History

When it began and why it matters

The Nine Arch Bridge was constructed between 1919 and 1921 under British colonial engineer Harold Sims Crawford, who used a design of nine stone arches to span the jungle gorge without any steel, reportedly because wartime restrictions had made steel unavailable for construction. The bridge is built entirely from locally cut stone, brick, and cement, and after more than a century of service it remains in full operational use carrying the Colombo–Badulla express.

The bridge has become so iconic in Sri Lanka's travel imagery that it is featured on tourism posters, textbooks, and currency.

Today, Nine Arch Bridge Train Viewing remains one of the highlights of visiting Uva Province, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.

Why famous

Why travellers seek it out

The Nine Arch Bridge is famous worldwide as the definitive image of Sri Lanka's scenic railway, combining architectural elegance, jungle setting, and the romance of a working steam-era viaduct in a single composition. When a train crosses — with carriages packed with passengers leaning from open doors — the scene distils everything travellers imagine about slow travel through the tropics.

Professional photographers and Instagram travellers alike regard the bridge as among Asia's top railway photography subjects.

The ideal time to visit is December–April, when conditions are at their finest and wildlife or weather cooperates most reliably with the experience.
