Lipton's Seat Viewpoint

Lipton's Seat is a hilltop viewpoint at 1,970 metres above sea level, perched at the edge of the Dambatenne Tea Estate above the town of Haputale. On clear days, the panorama encompasses seven of Sri Lanka's nine provinces — a sweep of emerald tea terraces, blue-green jungle, and distant coastal plain that extends to the Indian Ocean.

Visitors reach the viewpoint by walking or driving through the Dambatenne Estate roads, passing tea pickers at work and passing the tea factory that Sir Thomas Lipton himself built in 1890.

Dambatenne Tea Estate was established by Sir Thomas Lipton — the Scottish tea magnate who built his global tea empire from a base in Sri Lanka — in 1890. The viewpoint was named in his honour after his death in 1931 and has since become a pilgrimage for tea history enthusiasts and highland walkers.

The viewpoint is freely accessible by walking the estate road from Haputale; a private vehicle can drive to within 500 metres of the summit. Dawn visits (before 7 am) offer the best chance of clear skies before valley mist builds.
