History

When it began and why it matters

The Unawatuna Peace Pagoda was constructed in the 1970s by Japanese Buddhist monks of the Nipponzan-Myohoji order, which was founded by Nichidatsu Fujii (1885–1985) with the specific mission of building peace pagodas at sites around the world in response to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Sri Lanka's Peace Pagoda was part of a global network that includes structures in London, New York, Boston, Vienna, and across Japan.

The monks who built and maintain the pagoda also conduct regular peace drumming ceremonies at the site, continuing a tradition of active prayer for world peace.

Today, Japanese Peace Pagoda Unawatuna remains one of the highlights of visiting Southern Province, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.
