Horton Plains & World's End Hike

Horton Plains National Park is a windswept highland plateau at nearly 2,200 metres, traversed by a well-marked 9-kilometre circular trail that passes through montane cloud forests and rolling grasslands before arriving at World's End — a sheer precipice with a 1,000-metre drop to the southern lowlands below. Immediately after, the trail continues to Baker's Falls, a beautiful cascade tumbling through a densely forested gorge, before looping back to the entrance.

The park is home to the endemic purple-faced langur, sambar deer, and over 20 species of endemic birds including the rare Sri Lanka whistling thrush.

Horton Plains was declared a National Park in 1988 and added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010 as part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. The plateau was named after Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton, British Governor of Ceylon from 1831 to 1837, who promoted agricultural settlement of the highlands.

The park is the source of three major rivers — the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe — that drain to different coasts, making it one of the most important water catchment areas in the country.
