What it is

Gem Museum & Workshop Visit — the full experience

Sri Lanka — historically known as the "Island of Gems" — is one of the world's most important sources of precious and semi-precious gemstones, and a visit to a Kandy gem museum and workshop reveals the full journey from rough stone to polished jewel. Guides lead guests through displays of sapphires (blue, yellow, pink, and the famous padparadscha — a uniquely Sri Lankan orange-pink), rubies, alexandrite, cat's-eye chrysoberyl, and garnets, with explanations of mining conditions, heat treatment processes, and quality grading.

The gem workshop demonstrates the cutting and polishing process, and the showroom offers certified stones and jewellery at fixed prices with internationally recognised guarantees.

Shorta Tours arranges Gem Museum & Workshop Visit as part of a tailored private itinerary, providing expert guides, comfortable private transfers, and hand-picked operators to ensure a seamless and truly memorable experience.

Where

Where it is in Sri Lanka

Several reputable gem museums and showrooms operate near the Temple of the Tooth in central Kandy. The city has been a centre of the gem trade since antiquity, positioned near the highland gem fields of Elahera and Ratnapura.

Ratnapura — 100 km southwest of Kandy — is Sri Lanka's gem capital and offers a more immersive experience of open-cast gem pits and gemstone markets for interested guests.

Shorta Tours provides private transfers to Gem Museum & Workshop Visit from any base in Sri Lanka, coordinating timings to maximise enjoyment and minimise travel fatigue.

History

When it began and why it matters

Sri Lanka has been mined for precious gems for at least 2,500 years, with references to its blue sapphires appearing in ancient Greek, Arab, and Chinese texts. Marco Polo wrote in 1292 that "In this island there are sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and many other costly stones," and Arab traders called Sri Lanka "Serendib" — the origin of the English word "serendipity" — at least partly for the fortune of finding gems by chance.

The British colonial government established a gem department in the 19th century to regulate the industry, and today Sri Lanka's gem trade is governed by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority, which certifies stones for international export.

Today, Gem Museum & Workshop Visit remains one of the highlights of visiting Central Province, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.

Why famous

Why travellers seek it out

Sri Lanka is uniquely famous for producing the padparadscha sapphire — a delicate orange-pink stone with no equivalent anywhere in the world — as well as the finest blue sapphires outside of Kashmir. The country produces star sapphires and star rubies of exceptional quality, and the Sri Lankan alexandrite (which shifts from green in daylight to red in artificial light) is considered among the finest colour-change stones available.

Sri Lanka's gems are found without heat treatment in a higher proportion than most other origins, commanding premium prices in international markets.

The ideal time to visit is year-round, when conditions are at their finest and wildlife or weather cooperates most reliably with the experience.
