Gal Oya Boat Safari

Gal Oya Boat Safari is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in Sri Lanka: small wooden canoes navigate the vast Senanayake Samudra — the largest reservoir in the country — through flooded forest corridors where wild elephants swim between islands, egrets roost on submerged trees, and the silence is broken only by splashing and birdsong. The boat glides within metres of swimming elephants without disturbing them, as the animals are accustomed to the boats and continue bathing, swimming, and grazing on the islands as if the observers were not present.

The experience is entirely unlike any jeep safari and requires no roads — the reservoir is the habitat.

The Senanayake Samudra was created in 1951 as part of the Gal Oya Valley Development Scheme, Sri Lanka's first major post-independence irrigation and hydroelectric project, flooding an extensive area of lowland forest. The reservoir's construction displaced a large Vedda (indigenous) community but created a vast aquatic habitat that drew elephant populations and waterbirds in extraordinary numbers over the following decades.

Gal Oya was gazetted as a national park in 1954 to protect the catchment area; the boat safari experience was developed in the 1990s and is now considered one of the signature wildlife experiences in Sri Lanka.

Today, Gal Oya Boat Safari remains one of the highlights of visiting Eastern Province, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.

Entry requires a National Park ticket and the use of DWLC-approved canoes with trained boatmen. Dawn departures offer the best elephant activity.
