What it is

Dambulla Cave Temple Visit — the full experience

Dambulla Cave Temple — the Golden Temple of Dambulla — is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, comprising five caves that together house 153 Buddha statues, three statues of kings, and four statues of deities, all enshrined within paintings that cover every inch of ceiling and wall. Visitors walk up a rock path to the cave entrances, 160 metres above the surrounding plain, entering a sequence of sacred chambers dating from the 1st century BCE.

The caves remain an active place of Buddhist worship, and the scent of incense and the sound of chanting create an atmosphere of profound devotion.

Shorta Tours arranges Dambulla Cave Temple Visit as part of a tailored private itinerary, providing expert guides, comfortable private transfers, and hand-picked operators to ensure a seamless and truly memorable experience.

History

When it began and why it matters

The caves have been a place of shelter and worship since at least the 3rd century BCE, when Sinhalese king Valagamba took refuge here for 14 years after being driven from Anuradhapura by South Indian invaders. On his return to power in 89 BCE, Valagamba commissioned the conversion of the caves into a magnificent rock temple complex as an act of thanksgiving.

The caves were subsequently enlarged and embellished by kings over the following 2,000 years, resulting in the remarkable multi-layered UNESCO World Heritage Site that exists today.

Today, Dambulla Cave Temple Visit remains one of the highlights of visiting Cultural Triangle, Central Province, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.
