Brief Garden Tour

Brief Garden is the eccentric, magnificent garden created by Bevis Bawa — lawyer, planter, artist, and brother of the architect Geoffrey Bawa — on his 4-acre Beruwala estate, which he transformed over 40 years from a rubber plantation into a landscape of bold tropical planting, personal sculpture, literary references, and painterly tableaux that reflects the sensibility of a deeply cultured individual. The garden tour winds through a series of distinct zones: a formal water garden, a jungle grove of palms and ferns, a collection of terracotta figures, a gallery of Bevis Bawa's paintings, and the main house, with its extraordinary collection of objects gathered over a lifetime of travel and friendship.

The estate was visited by Vivien Leigh, Gregory Peck, and the sculptor Laki Senanayake, whose wire figures hang from the garden trees.

Brief Garden was developed by Bevis Bawa from 1929, when he inherited the rubber plantation, until his death in 1992. Bevis was the elder brother of architect Geoffrey Bawa, whose visits to Brief — and whose architectural responses to the landscape — are documented in the estate archives.

The garden gained international recognition through the photography of Dominic Sansoni and travel writing by Jan Morris, and was donated by Bevis to the National Trust for Sri Lanka to be maintained as a heritage site in perpetuity after his death.

Today, Brief Garden Tour remains one of the highlights of visiting Western Province south, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.

Entry fee applies; advance booking through the estate is advised. Visits are self-guided with an estate map; the house interior is included.
