What it is

Ambuluwawa Tower Climb — the full experience

Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex is a remarkable hilltop sanctuary 15 km south of Kandy that combines a unique multi-faith tower — the only structure in Sri Lanka to incorporate Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian places of worship in a single building — with a reserve forest that protects the endemic highland flora of the Central Province. The tower's exterior features a helical stairway that winds around the outside of the building in a continuous spiral, requiring some nerve and agility to ascend but delivering 360-degree views of the surrounding highlands at the top.

The complex also includes the four separate shrines for each faith, meditation pavilions, and forest nature trails.

Shorta Tours arranges Ambuluwawa Tower Climb as part of a tailored private itinerary, providing expert guides, comfortable private transfers, and hand-picked operators to ensure a seamless and truly memorable experience.

Where

Where it is in Sri Lanka

Ambuluwawa lies 15 km from Kandy via Gampola town, a 35-minute drive by private vehicle. The hilltop is accessible by car to within 200 metres of the tower.

Gampola itself is an historic town that briefly served as the capital of the Kingdom of Kotte in the 14th century. Ambuluwawa combines well with Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and the Temple of the Tooth on a Kandy day.

Shorta Tours provides private transfers to Ambuluwawa Tower Climb from any base in Sri Lanka, coordinating timings to maximise enjoyment and minimise travel fatigue.

History

When it began and why it matters

The Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex was established in 1999 by Sri Lanka's Forest Department as a demonstration project linking religious harmony, biodiversity conservation, and community development on a single hilltop. The multi-faith tower — designed to represent the spirit of Ambuluwawa (a sacred hill mentioned in ancient chronicles) — was constructed with contributions from all four major religious communities in the surrounding Gampola area.

The complex has since become a model for interfaith cooperation in Sri Lanka and is visited by Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian pilgrims alongside secular tourists.

Today, Ambuluwawa Tower Climb remains one of the highlights of visiting Central Province, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.

Why famous

Why travellers seek it out

Ambuluwawa is famous for being the only building in Sri Lanka — and one of very few anywhere in the world — to physically integrate four separate faith traditions in a single structure, making it a living symbol of religious pluralism. The helical external stairway is an engineering curiosity and a physical challenge: the outer ramp spirals continuously without handrails at the upper levels, and the sensation of height is acute.

The panoramic view from the summit — looking across the Mahaweli valley, Kandy, and the surrounding tea-covered highlands — is one of the finest viewpoints accessible by car in the Central Province.

The ideal time to visit is December–April, when conditions are at their finest and wildlife or weather cooperates most reliably with the experience.
