What it is

Adam's Peak Pilgrimage Trek — the full experience

Adam's Peak (Sri Pada — Sacred Footprint) rises to 2,243 metres in the central highlands, its summit bearing a large impression in the rock that is venerated as the footprint of the Buddha by Buddhists, of Shiva by Hindus, and of Adam by Muslims and Christians — making it one of the most spiritually significant peaks for multiple faiths simultaneously. The ascent follows a flight of 5,500 steps lit by lanterns and lined with tea stalls from December to May (the pilgrimage season), and the summit ceremony at sunrise — when the conical shadow of the peak projects dramatically westward across the clouds at dawn — is one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena in Asia.

Outside the pilgrimage season, the route is closed, and the experience is fundamentally tied to the atmosphere created by thousands of pilgrims climbing through the night together.

Shorta Tours arranges Adam's Peak Pilgrimage Trek as part of a tailored private itinerary, providing expert guides, comfortable private transfers, and hand-picked operators to ensure a seamless and truly memorable experience.

History

When it began and why it matters

Adam's Peak has been a site of pilgrimage for at least 1,000 years, with records of climbing pilgrims dating to the 11th century CE. The peak was visited by Marco Polo in the late 13th century, and Ibn Battuta — the great Arab traveller — made the climb in 1344.

The stairway was reportedly built under the patronage of successive Sinhalese kings, who regarded the maintenance of pilgrimage infrastructure as a royal duty. The British colonial government built the current stepped pathway in a form very similar to what exists today, though individual steps have been replaced and repaired countless times since.

Today, Adam's Peak Pilgrimage Trek remains one of the highlights of visiting Sabaragamuwa / Central Province, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.

Why famous

Why travellers seek it out

Adam's Peak is famous for the sunrise shadow phenomenon unique to this mountain: as the sun rises over the eastern horizon on a clear morning, the peak casts a perfect conical shadow westward that briefly aligns with the shadow of the chain of the mountain itself, creating an astonishing visual illusion. The summit is reached by many thousands of pilgrims nightly during the season (December–May), and the sight of the lantern-lit stairway ascending into the darkness from below — with a river of devotees moving in both directions — is one of the most memorable experiences available in Sri Lanka.

The multi-faith significance of the footprint means that pilgrims of all religions can make the climb together in a spirit of shared devotion.

The ideal time to visit is December–May (pilgrimage season), when conditions are at their finest and wildlife or weather cooperates most reliably with the experience.
